"While most people initially think they are photographs, I create my etching plates using only traditional techniques. They are line and aquatint in a series of ten steps, each consisting of either a drawing or painting and a timed submersion in a tray of acid. Before the ten steps, I search the forests, lands and shores of our continent's northern regions for a location that elevates my spirit. From sketches, memory and a lifetime of nature observation, I draw with a needle on a zinc plate coated with an acid-resistant ground and paint with an acid-resistant shellac on an aquatint ground. Two drawings appear as heavy lines and light lines. Eight paintings appear as tonal areas, from white to many grays to black." - Barbara Pihos
Barbara Pihos lives in Illinois and has been a professional artist for over eighteen years.
